I was thinking about the benefits of giving lifts not in terms of actual repayment but in terms of wellbeing which in itself can be rewarding. For drivers I know sometimes passengers can be a distraction but on the whole I think they would keep you more alert on routes where you attention can start to drift because it is such a familiar route. Have you ever experienced that situation when driving when you reach a point in the journey and can't specifically recall how you got there. I don't...

I read about this in the Metro online. If you can’t afford to live in London check out this interactive map that shows you the nearest affordable commuter towns. You can set parameters to reflect the maximum time you want to commute, how much you can afford to spend on train travel, the value of the property and the amount of your disposable income. Once this is done the online tool from TotallyMoney.com will show you a selection of towns that match your criteria –...

I came across this site when searching for travel information, its not strictly a Commuting Challenge idea but more of a source of information that could be useful in discussions on commuting and other travel related topics. I have a vague recollection of seeing information published by them previously but did not realise all the work they are doing. It is worth taking a look as they cover a lot of areas that we are discussing. For 40 years, working with hundreds of thousands of inspiring...

I posted something about this in response to an idea but I thought it was worth sharing in detail as this brings up the topic of pregnant women travelling and potentially commuting. Not an issue for me now but it was many years ago.I can remember dealing with morning sickness, overcrowded trains and not getting a seat. This is what Virgin Trains have done in response to feedback: Pregnant women will never have to stand on certain Virgin Trains again if they pick up a free 'mum pass'. If...

Welcome to an even easier way to pay You can now pay your friends and family using just their mobile number. It means that you’ll never have to ask anyone for their current account number or sort code (providing they’ve done the sensible thing and registered too). So now, thanks to participating UK banks and building societies, it’s easy to pay someone back even while you’re on the go! I was doing some online research and found this. It looks like an easy way to pay friends...

I decided to see what wikiHow had to say about making the most of your commute and we seem to have come up with most of their suggestions: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-The-Most-of-Your-Commute   It also reminded me that I like to make lists on journeys:   Things I need to do at work   Things I want to say at a meeting   Things I need to do at home   Shopping Lists   Birthday/Christmas Lists   Resolution Lists   List of things I have or don't have and want...

I know quite a lot of people who like to cycle to work but there are barriers that make this difficult. A lot of businesses don't have bike storage/stands or there is no public storage in the viccinity. They then risk getting their bike removed if they chain it somewhere they should not like railings or getting it stolen. There should be Government incentives for Councils and Businesses to provide secure Bike Storage or supervised bike parking areas as part of their commitment to the Green...

A lot of commuting congestion is caused by cars. So what about an incentive scheme that rewards you for leaving the car at home? This could be operated in different ways, here are a few ideas: A travel operator might award you points for every journey spend that can be used to gain discounts/vouchers for future journeys. This one could apply to all travellers not just car drivers. It could be done using a reward card. An app or website could be created where you could register as the...

Okay this challenge seems to be developing beyond how you can repay a friend for giving you a lift. So what about the Government stepping in and taking more accountability to encourage greener living and multiple car occupancy? They could offer free road tax for people officially registered with them as car sharers. There would have to be some monitoring and checks done to ensure validity and avoid people trying to inappropriately register but it could provide a great incentive particular...

This idea is following on from the ideas about having designated themed carriages or generally encouraging more interaction on public transport. What about having Show and Tell days where passengers are encouraged to share their hobbies and skills with fellow passengers. This was partially inspired from seeing people knitting on buses but would not always have to involve physical activities. It could also be done using smartphones and tablets to help people to explain and demonstrate what...
